After seeing Sandra Marvin in Hairspray, City of Angels and Show Boat, Koala was very excited to realise she was doing a solo concert in London at the hidden gem: The Crazy Coqs within the Zedel. The venue is beautiful, and makes you feel as if you are entering a different place and time entirely. It is somewhere we would both happily attend again for further concerts. It is a very intimate space and you felt the love and admiration from every person in the room, particularly as it was mainly filled with Marvin's fellow musical theatre actors and friends.
Marvin’s voice is distinctive, extremely powerful and very emotive. Panda, having never seen her in anything before, sat staring in awe at how easy she was making it look, and how comfortable she seemed on the stage.
Having been in an amateur dramatic version of City of Angels years before being cast in the Donmar revival in 2014, Marvin chose to take on "With Every Breath I Take" from the show. A song, she said, she'd always wanted to sing but still hadn't. She definitely did the song justice, making it her own.
At various points throughout the evening, she was joined by two guests - her City of Angels and Show Boat co-star, Rebecca Trehearn (who recently won a well-deserved Olivier) and Edward Baruwa, best known for his roles in Les Miserables and Motown. Both stars complimented Marvin’s voice beautifully, making it an honour to see such talent on the stage, and voices that are definitely well deserving of a bigger one. Trehearn has a voice that is just as unique as Marvin’s, and equally as compelling, and as Marvin herself stated during the evening “Edward has a voice as smooth as chocolate but without the calories.”
Marvin ended the evening with an amazing rendition of "I Know Where I've Been" from Hairspray, a song that resonates strongly in the current climate, and means so much to so many. It left both Panda and Koala sobbing and received a very, very well-earned standing ovation from all present. Our only issue with the show ending on such a powerful and emotional song is that we could have quite happily sat through an act two.
Some shows and voices stay with you for a long time – this one is most definitely on that list.
We definitely cannot wait to see and hear more, and we recommend all of you do the same at the first opportunity you get.
